Conquer the ice: ride a snowmobile on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier
Join this thrilling snowmobile experience on the mighty Mýrdalsjökull Glacier! Spend 1-hour riding across the ice field, with breathtaking scenery and an experienced guide. This tour doesn’t require previous snowmobile riding experience, and anyone over the age of 17 with a valid driver’s licence can operate the snowmobile. But, if there are kids over 8 in the group or non-drivers, they can ride as a passenger. Get ready to glide on a glacier!
This exhilarating day tour allows you to ride a snowmobile on a glacier. But getting there is half the fun. After meeting at base camp (see map), outfitted in the required gear and briefed on safety, you will board a specially-equipped glacier truck that will take you up the mountain (about 30 minutes). You’ve never seen a vehicle like this! As you power along, the gigantic tyres deflate on the climb up the glacier. On clear days, the view is spectacular, and the ride alone is worth the trip! It will transport you nearly to the top of the glacier, where you will embark on the snowmobile ride.
After jumping out of the monster truck, you find yourself standing on top of a vast ice cap, ready to explore this icy world. Standing on the glacier and taking in its wild, remote beauty is incredible. The Mýrdalsjökull Glacier is Iceland’s fourth largest glacier and covers the volcano Katla.
Your guide will explain how the snowmobile works and how to ride it in a safe and fun manner. After about 1 hour of snowmobiling, you go back down with the glacier truck, about 30 minutes, to base camp, where the tour ends.
Please note: All drivers must be 17 years of age or older and have a full, valid driver’s licence. According to Icelandic law, a learner’s permit, tractor, or motorcycle licence is insufficient. Single riders and groups with odd numbers must book a single-ride snowmobile.
