Do you need a licence to drive an ATV in Iceland?

You need a full valid driving licence to drive an ATV in Iceland. Unfortunately, according to Icelandic law, a motorbike or tractor licence, or a provisional licence, will not be sufficient. You will also need to be at least 17 years of age.

Anyone that does not have a valid licence can still join an Iceland ATV tour, but you will have to be a passenger. You will not be able to drive.

What do you wear to an ATV ride?

As part of all of our Iceland ATV tours, you’ll be provided with waterproof overalls, a balaclava and helmet, and waterproof boots if they’re required. However, you’ll need to come prepared with everything else you need to stay warm.

We recommend that you wear lots of warm layers, including a thermal base layer, a jumper or midlayer, and a warm jacket. While you won’t need a hat, warm socks and gloves can be a good idea.

Can I carry a camera or GoPro during the ATV ride?

Yes, you're allowed to bring a camera or GoPro to capture the stunning landscapes. However, keep in mind that you're responsible for securely attaching your equipment.

Can a 2 year old go on an ATV?

Unfortunately, two year olds won’t be able to ride on an ATV in Iceland. On all our tours, you will have to be at least 8 years old to ride and at least 17 to drive. This is to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

How many people can sit in an ATV?

While most ATVs are built for just a single driver, the vehicles we use on our ATV tours in Iceland can fit a driver and a passenger. This way, if someone doesn’t have a valid licence, they can ride as a passenger. If you both do, then you can take it in turns to drive!

How many drivers does an ATV have?

An ATV only requires one driver at a time. However, on most Iceland ATV tours, you will ride in pairs on each vehicle.

This way, if you both have a full valid driving licence, you will be able to swap so you can each have a go at driving. Or, if you’re on holiday with someone without a licence, they can ride on the back.

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is a type of vehicle that you can drive on any surface, including snow, sandy beaches, and rocky mountains. They’re often otherwise known as quad bikes or off-road vehicles.

On an ATV tour in Iceland, you’ll be led across some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes. You’ll climb mountains, cross rivers and glaciers, and see iconic sights along the way.

Most ATVs have automatic gears, with the only real exceptions being racing quad bikes, which have manual gears. It’s one less thing to think about if you’ve never driven one before.

What if I get cold easily? Will the gear provided be enough?

While we provide insulated coveralls, helmets, balaclavas, and boots (optional), we do recommend wearing warm, layered clothing underneath, especially if you are sensitive to cold.

An ATV is a vehicle that can handle any environment, landscape, or terrain that you want to use it on. It’s often also referred to as an off-road vehicle (ORV), a quad bike, or a light utility vehicle (LUV).

While they’re designed to be taken off-road, you still need to treat them with caution and respect. They are powerful machines that can reach high speeds.

How old do you have to be to drive an ATV in Iceland?

You need to be at least 17 years old to drive an ATV in Iceland. This is according to Icelandic law.

You’ll also need to have a valid full driving licence. Unfortunately, a learner’s permit, a provisional licence, or a licence specific to tractors or motorcycles are not sufficient.

If you don’t have a licence, you can ride on the back of an ATV driven by someone who does. You’ll need a minimum of 7 years to ride.

The tour operates in all kinds of weather unless it causes any concern for safety, and a little rain can even add to the adventure! It's part of the Icelandic experience. We do recommend that guests bring rain gear just in case.

You should dress according to the day's weather and the forecast. On sunny days, it can be even warmer on the glacier than at the base. If it's rainy, it's best to have waterproof layers and extra clothes ready by your car. On windy days, it feels colder on the glacier.

The tour lasts for 3.5 hours in total. This duration includes our bus transfer to the terminal face of the glacier. We will be spending approximately 1.5 to 2 hours directly on the ice.

Please inform your guide beforehand about any medical conditions. It's essential to have a personal assessment of your health and physical condition before undertaking a glacier hike.

What gear do I have to bring?

It's best to wear highly breathable and quick-drying clothes; try to avoid cotton. High ankle support shoes, like hiking boots, are mandatory. If you don't have any, you can rent them at the base.

What should I be aware of regarding physical or health limitations for glacier hike tours?

Walking on a glacier is different from regular walking and can be demanding due to the use of crampons, which can limit movement and be exhausting for some.

If you have heart conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma, please notify your guide during check-in.

We suggest that individuals with any injuries or medical conditions that might affect their glacier experience book a private tour.

The glacier is not accessible for those with limited mobility or using wheelchairs or crutches.

Additionally, strollers and baby carriers cannot be used on our tours. Pregnant women over 12 weeks are not permitted unless it's a private booking.

It takes about 20 minutes to drive towards the glacier. Starting from the Skaftafell base camp, we use a 4x4 bus to drive right up to the front of the glacier. Shortly after, you'll begin your walk on the ice.

How do I get to Sólheimasandur?

Renting a car is one of the most convenient ways to reach Sólheimasandur. From Reykjavik, follow Route 1 east along the southern coast. Drive about 160 kilometres from Reykjavik until you reach the turnoff for Sólheimajökull Glacier. Follow the signs for the parking area for the DC-3 plane wreck site.

When is the best time to visit Sólheimajökull glacier?

Sólheimajökull Glacier walking is possible all year round, so you can visit when the sun shines in summer or in deepest, coldest winter. The benefit of visiting Sólheimajökull in summer is that the long hours of daylight allow for longer adventures on the frozen surface of the glacier. The clearer, sunnier weather in summer also means road closures are less likely. Occasionally, when there is a snowstorm or wild weather in winter, glacier hikes will be cancelled as conditions are too dangerous. However, there is a benefit to visiting Sólheimajökull glacier in winter. It is only during the colder months that you can visit the Blue Ice Cave – one of Iceland’s most beautiful natural frozen caves. During the warmer months, the entranceway melts making it too dangerous to access so you need to visit Sólheimajökull glacier between the beginning of November and the end of March if you want to check out the ice cave.

How to get to Sólheimajökull glacier?

In terms of finding the way, a Sólheimajökull glacier self-drive adventure is very easy. Simply follow the Route One main road out of Reykjavík and drive for around two hours before turning onto Route 221 gravel road for 4 kilometres. This takes you right to Sólheimajökull car park. However, as it is only possible to walk on Sólheimajökull glacier with a trained, professional guide, it is usually easier to join an organised Sólheimajökull Glacier hike tour from Reykjavík which includes transfers.

How to dress for Sólheimajökull glacier?

For a glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, you need to bring a pair of high-ankled walking boots, rather than walking shoes, as you’ll need to fit a set of crampons onto them. Crampons, helmets and ice axes will be supplied by your glacier guide, so there’s no need to bring this equipment with you. Your walking boots should be waterproof too, as the surface of the glacier is snowy and icy. Sólheimajökull Glacier weather can be unpredictable, especially in the winter months, so layers are essential. A sports t-shirt, fleece and waterproof jacket are a good combination as it is cold at the bottom of the glacier, but you soon warm up hiking uphill, especially when the sun shines overhead. You’ll want to de-layer as you go.

How difficult is the walk to Sólheimajökull glacier?

The walk up to the base of Iceland’s Sólheimajökull glacier tongue is not easy. Even if you are not hiking up to the surface of the glacier, you still need to cross rocky paths with uneven footing. Although the walk is not very long, you will need to wear some sturdy walking boots just to reach the base of the glacial tongue.

Sólheimajökull glacier walking is generally considered easy to modarate. These are family friendly tours and generally less challenging than the Skaftafell glacier hikes. You need to be fit enough to walk on uneven terrain, uphill and comfortable going up crudely hacked ice stairs in crampons. Glacier hikes tend to take around an hour and a half, so you need to be comfortable walking for this length of time across some icy surface and sometimes snow. For those that really want a challenge, there is the opportunity to try ice climbing on Sólheimajökull glacier.

Around Sólheimajökull glacier, you’ll find a scattering of family-run guesthouses and B&Bs on farmsteads. Accommodation in this remote area often comes in the form of wooden cabins on farmland and has the bonus of waking to views of waterfalls, rugged hills and even glaciers. For a wider array of accommodation, the charming coastal village of Vík is a half-hour drive away where you’ll find hotels, hostels and B&Bs for all budgets and a selection of restaurants for evening meals.

From the car park, it is only a 15 to 20-minute walk to the base of Sólheimajökull glacier. The walk to the base is actually getting longer every year as Sólheimajökull glacier is shrinking. Guided walks on the glacier’s surface take around an hour and a half with the most strenuous activity on the way up.

Sólheimajökull glacier is one of the most popular places to take a glacier walk in Iceland. You can walk on the frozen surface of the glacier as long as you join an organised, guided tour with a professional glacier hiker leading the way. The surface hides sinkholes and ravines in the ice, so walking on Sólheimajökull glacier by yourself is not allowed as it is too dangerous. It is also one of the few places in Iceland where you can try ice climbing – using ropes and pickaxes to scale a wall of crystalline ice.
