New Year’s Eve Magic: Icelandic Folklore, Fireworks & Hidden Elves Tour
Join our guided tour to uncover Iceland's unique New Year's Eve traditions and enchanting folklore, led by a local expert.
Icelanders love New Year´s Eve, and there is always a festive, happy feeling floating in the air. Spend the morning with us exploring Reykjavik and learn about the special traditions and Icelandic folklore related to the magical New Year´s Eve in Iceland.
Our first stop takes us to the Icelandic Rescue Team's firework sales, a long-standing tradition that plays a crucial role in Iceland’s culture. Each New Year’s Eve, Icelanders light up over 600 tons of fireworks—nearly 5 pounds (2 kg) per person! Purchasing fireworks not only supports this dazzling celebration but also funds rescue operations throughout the year, providing crucial resources for teams that offer free aid to those in need. We’ll even meet a local rescue team member to hear firsthand about this unique fundraiser and its impact on Icelandic communities.
Next, we visit the historic Reykjavík cemetery, beautifully illuminated and adorned with winter decorations. During this season, families gather here to honor their loved ones, lighting up graves in a touching display of remembrance—a cherished Icelandic tradition. Amidst this serene atmosphere, we’ll hear the mysterious tale of the graveyard caretaker and the eerie legend of why the dead are said to rise from their graves on New Year's Eve. This unique visit offers a glimpse into Iceland's deep cultural roots and its fascinating folklore.
Then, we journey to Hafnarfjörður, the 'town in the lava,' renowned for its rich elf folklore. Here, we’ll visit a famed elf stone, a revered site where the mystical hidden people are believed to dwell. On New Year’s Eve, it's said these hidden beings roam freely, adding an air of enchantment to this charming town. Prepare to immerse yourself in Iceland's magical legends and the spirited presence of its "hidden folks"!
The tour ends in a beautiful forest grove where we light our sparkles, toast to life and love and say farewell to the passing year in traditional Icelandic fashion!
