Immerse yourself in Iceland's raw beauty, majestic valleys, and rugged terrain.
The spectacular Þórsmörk (Thor’s Forest) area offers landscapes ranging from towering mountains to scores of glacial streams and kilometers of black sand. It is a favorite among nature-loving Icelanders and travelers from around the world. Book the Highland Bus for your hiking adventure!
Þórsmörk is a lush oasis in the summer surrounded by glaciers, mountains, and vast highlands. Located in the country's interior, this is the least traveled part of Iceland, making it feel special and somewhat untouched. You won’t find crowds here.
Þórsmörk isn’t just known for its unique beauty; it’s also the start or finish of two of Iceland’s most popular hiking trails, Laugavegur (to Landmannalaugar) and Fimmvörðuháls (to Skógar). Laugavegur is a 3-4 day hike, while Fimmvörðuháls is a day trip, two days if you want to take your time to appreciate the surroundings. If you prefer shorter hikes or leisurely strolls in the rugged wilderness, Þórsmörk has numerous well-marked trails.
This is not an accessible region to get to, as there are river crossings, and you need a vehicle with a high enough clearance to cross. Making it here is no easy feat, and taking the Highland Bus is safe and convenient.
Icelandic highland roads are often dirt tracks or gravel roads and can be pretty tricky to navigate. The road to Þórsmörk is challenging due to the mighty glacial river that needs to be crossed and challenging road conditions and is not accessible to regular vehicles. Reykjavik Excursions operates specialized highland buses with professional drivers that navigate these roads with ease and comfort. The Highland Bus runs daily* between Reykjavik and Skógar/Þórsmörk/Landmannalaugar to serve the nature-loving hikers and travelers that frequent these parts.
