Nestled in the heart of Landmannalaugar, within the Icelandic Highlands, Ljótipollur is a striking volcanic crater with a name that means “Ugly Puddle” in Icelandic, though its beauty is far from ugly. This vibrant geological formation was created by a series of volcanic eruptions in the 15th century and is now home to a stunning, deep blue lake surrounded by steep, rugged walls of red and black volcanic rock.

Geological Features

Ljótipollur is part of the Torfajökull volcanic system, known for its geothermal activity and volcanic history. The crater itself, measuring about 1.5 kilometers in length, erupted on a fissure and has since been filled with water, creating a scenic contrast between the dark rock walls and the shimmering lake. Under the snow in winter, the red and black hues of the crater’s walls often peek through, adding a dramatic splash of color to the otherwise white landscape.

Why Visit Ljótipollur?

Though it may not be as famous as some of Iceland’s other natural landmarks, Ljótipollur is a favorite among those who venture into Landmannalaugar. It offers a peaceful, less-visited location to admire Iceland’s volcanic terrain. The surrounding area provides excellent hiking and skiing routes, making it a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. The panoramic views from the crater rim are awe-inspiring, with sweeping vistas of the Icelandic Highlands and, on clear days, distant glaciers such as Vatnajökull and Langjökull.
